This year not only marks the 10th anniversary of our esteemed university, but also celebrates a decade since the foundation of the General Education (GE) Program. Numerous alumni, all over the world, expressed their gratitude and wishes to GE Program. Many shared how the GE courses and the philosophy of General Education have influenced their academic pursuits, career choices, and life trajectories. After a meticulous selection process, we would like to present the following alumni's messages and reflective journals as footnotes to the growth of the GE Program and milestones of students' personal development.

Hello everyone, I am Zhang Jiayi, a graduate of the Class of 2023 from the School of Humanities and Social Science, and I am currently a first-year master's student in East Asian Studies at Yale University. It is my great pleasure to share my personal academic experiences amidst the 10th anniversary of our university's launch of GE courses.

I enrolled in a diverse range of GE courses during my undergraduate studies: from philosophy of religion to gender studies; from political economy to digital humanities. Looking back, I find myself very lucky. GE courses continuously cultivated my imagination and sensibility and motivated me to stay curious of social surroundings.

GE courses also directly, and very surprisingly, shaped my research interests and career plans. I was fortunate to have taken Introduction to Sociology, as well as Gender and Sexuality in Contemporary Society taught by Professor Han Yuchen during my undergraduate studies. Between classes, I often went to Professor Han and raised questions. Professor Han's explanations and critical reflections are always thought-provoking, often leading me to new reflections and curiosities. At the moment, I plan to write my master’s thesis based on my previous interests and to focus on Chinese workers' labor processes and their labor relations. I am excited to continue pursuing my academic interests in future studies and research.

Finally, I am very glad to witness the tenth anniversary of our university's launch of GE courses and I am looking forward to the next decade!

Talking of the General Education course, the most important one to me is the one called "How to Change the World to a Sustainable Future," lectured by Prof. Li Mo. This course lays out a very solid foundation for my sustainability exploration. The course provided trendy insights about sustainability and is highly correlated with the real business world. After my bachelor's study, I decided to pursue my master's degree in a Nordic country, Finland. I really appreciate the mindful suggestions from Prof. Li, stating that a Nordic country is a very good place for exploring sustainability. It is certain that, without that course and the instruction from Prof. Li, I wouldn't be here. Last year, I successfully got my first sustainability-related job titled as ESG Analyst in Hong Kong, by using the knowledge I acquired in the course. Now, as I approach graduation from my master's degree, I have received a job offer from a company from a Netherlands company without much struggle. My background is well-suited for them, with European education and a Chinese background, along with expertise in the ESG market and sustainability. For those watching the video, I would sincerely suggest attaching importance to the GE course. I would say my most enjoyable moments at CUHK-Shenzhen are having these deep thoughts and talks with GE teachers and peers.

As an enthusiast of humanities, I basically treated GE courses as my 'major' studies. The courses I took included Modern Chinese History, American Intellectual History, and Religious Studies, all of which I found very interesting.

However, the courses that had the greatest impact on me were those related to philosophy. Even before entering college, I had a strong interest in philosophy. Taking GE courses and interacting with the professors in the GE Program further consolidated my wish to pursue an academic path in philosophy. These courses provided me with a foundational understanding of the history of Western philosophy, philosophy of language, logic, philosophy of religion, as well as Chinese philosophy. When I applied for a graduate program in philosophy, I received significant guidance and help from several philosophy professors in the General Education Program, for which I am very grateful. Another General Education course that greatly influenced me was the History of Quantum Mechanics, which sparked my strong interest in the philosophy of science, and philosophy of science is now my primary research area. Additionally, I must mention the course on existentialism, where I was deeply shocked and inspired by existentialist thinkers such as Sartre, Nietzsche, and Heidegger with their reflections on how one should live their lives.

Finally, I sincerely wish the General Education Program all the best and even greater achievements in the next ten years.

另一门令我大开眼界的是“The Future is Now!”。

Since childhood, I've been drawn to exploring the seemingly "useless" aspects of life,

endlessly curious about the world around me.

Whether wandering through bookstores, pausing at every shelf, or channel-surfing on TV and internet,

I find joy in discovering new songs, films, and podcasts;

Traveling to different places, meeting diverse people,

and listening to their stories further enriches my experiences. This pursuit of knowledge, serves as a refuge from the incessant demands of work,

restoring balance and bringing spiritual fulfillment.

So, when I encountered the general education program at university,

my excitement knew no bounds.

Here was an opportunity to explore subjects I was genuinely passionate about.

Reflecting back on those years,

I now recognize the profound significance of those course designs.

The readings for core courses like "In Dialogue with Humanity" and "In Dialogue with Nature" stand as timeless classics, shaping my understanding of the world in profound ways.

Yet, it wasn't just the curriculum that left an impression.

The vibrant class discussions, thought-provoking debates, and immersive field trips

provided a rich tapestry of perspectives from individuals of diverse backgrounds.

This dynamic environment served as a microcosm of society itself,

offering invaluable insights into human interaction and societal dynamics.

Above all, the program taught me the importance of approaching subjects with rigor and

objectivity, fostering a deeper, more sustainable engagement with knowledge.

It reshaped my curiosity,

guiding me towards a more structured and purposeful pursuit of understanding.

The impact of this experience extended far beyond the classroom,

influencing my approach to problem-solving and research as a young scholar.

It laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to learning and discovery.

As I reflect on my journey,

I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunities afforded by the GE program.

I hope and deeply believe that it will continue to thrive and evolve,

empowering future generations to explore, question, and grow.

In a world of constant change, let us remain steadfast in our ideals,

striving to become not just informed individuals,

but thoughtful and interesting citizens of the world :)
